The Desert (Living System)
What players would know
The desert is not empty. It is unstable.
Water does not “run” here; it relocates. Oases appear, vanish, and migrate as if the land is changing its mind. A good map is a story you can trade, not a truth you can trust.
If you travel it, you learn quickly what the settled world forgets: permanence is a luxury. Routes are relationships. Waste is a crime. The desert punishes arrogance faster than violence.
What survives out there
- Nomadic caravan-clans like the Travelers, who treat the road as law.
- Herds of desert reptiles (beasts of burden, blood, and survival), and the Skyrider pairs who scout above the dunes.
- Volcanic corridors and ash valleys, including the Eastern Passage, where rumor insists Ifrit keep the rules.
Common rumors
- The desert produces a seasonal desert truffle that the Church quietly depends on.
- Oases are “temporary courts”: when tribes collide, the fight has rules—or it becomes a war (Shifting Oases).
