“Ifrit” is the common name for fire-willed beings associated with volcanic country and hot, thin places where stone remembers heat. People argue about whether they are spirits, elementals, demons, or something older than those categories. The argument doesn’t matter much at the edge of an ash valley.

Most folk who claim to have seen an Ifrit are describing the consequences: scorched footprints that don’t match any boot, voices carried by heat shimmer, and the feeling that the air itself is deciding whether you are permitted to breathe.
