Rangers
What players would know
Rangers are not hunters who joined the army. They are soldiers trained to survive where governance fails: where roads vanish, supply lines rot, and the map becomes a comforting lie.
They’re few in number, brutally trained, and deployed when a commander needs eyes and hands in places conventional units can’t hold.
Most rangers specialize in a primary environment:
- Forest: concealment, ambush, and reading canopy movement and animal displacement.
- Jungle: disease, sabotage, and intelligence work in vertical, humid terrain.
- Desert: water discipline, navigation by scarcity, and long-range interdiction.
- Pass (Pass Wardens): mountain passes and hard corridors; escort and route-work where weather kills faster than blades (often an orc/half-orc specialty).
Common rumors
- Rangers don’t win battles; they make battles unnecessary.
- A ranger’s first enemy is terrain, and their second is paperwork.
- Forest rangers and druids can read the same signs and reach opposite conclusions.
