Session 7 Player Recap - Sankt Orn's Rest (2026-07-30)

Session 7 Recap: The Empty Wagons

At Sankt Orn’s Rest, the investigation sent warnings in both directions—and then discovered that the suspected cargo had moved without anyone seeing when.

Recap

The Broadbarrel caravan reached Sankt Orn’s Rest, a road town where repairs, witnessed messages, Church custody, and caravan records all meet.

Fren used the town’s Post-Service to send two coded, sealed reports. The first went to Lord Althric von Eichenwald and described the suspected cases buried beside the road, the landmarks used to mark them, the shock-braced wagons, Bianca’s death, and the party’s route toward Valdengratz. The second warned the party’s station at Valdengratz that the caravan may justify inspection. It included descriptions of the suspicious wagons, their hidden compartments, and a warning that the compartments may be trapped or dangerous to force open.

While those messages entered the relay, the party created cover in the town’s inn. Aurelia bought drinks for Marda Flint, played for the room, and kept Marda away from the rest of the Brazen Pike for as long as she could. Marda did not give up a new piece of hard evidence, and she saw through Aurelia’s attempt to suggest that something was about to go wrong. Aurelia covered the awkwardness by presenting the evening as a search for friendly company and even complimenting Jessa Crow.

Fren played circular chess near Branka Voss and was soundly beaten by a gifted local boy. The boy won Fren’s pile of coins and left with a letter of recommendation to Fren’s old academy. He also helped Fren look at the cargo problem differently: if the count does not balance, follow the wagons that are repeatedly moved, watched, or protected.

Gashesh and Ishtar used the noise and attention in the inn to search the caravan again. With invisibility, careful lock work, and minor illusion as cover, they inspected the shock-braced wagons and the wagon that had been unloaded for repairs.

The compartments they reached were empty.

The ordinary freight from the repair wagon had been redistributed, the other shock-braced wagons could still be located, and the party marked the most suspicious cluster. But no new case was recovered. The important question was no longer simply where the cases were hidden. It was when they had left the wagons.

The ground added another mystery. Selected wagon positions showed unusual plant growth, but there was no useful trail showing who had moved the cases. The party considered several possibilities: a transfer during the town’s confusion, a nearby temporary hiding place, magic affecting the ground, or a Fey Road or time distortion that created a handoff window nobody remembered. None of those explanations was proved.

During the search, Gashesh saw a Raccoon Fox. He made a private vow to finish Bianca’s last mission. After that, he would find a way to stop other people suffering the kind of loss that had taken her, even though he no longer knew what shape his own life should take.

The next day Fren explored an isolated cellar and found signs of possible blight and unfamiliar mushrooms. He collected samples, inhaled spores, and—in the service of scholarship—tasted one. The result was violent sickness rather than revelation. Gashesh’s examination suggested that Fren would recover.

With the cargo trail cold, the party considered a much more direct move: abducting Branka and interrogating her in the cellar. Ishtar approached Branka’s room invisibly and tried the lock, but Branka was awake. She heard enough to push furniture against the door and fortify the room. The party aborted rather than force the confrontation.

The session ended the following morning with the caravan preparing to leave Sankt Orn’s Rest.

What players would know

  • Two coded reports are moving through the Post-Service: one toward Althric’s office and one toward the Valdengratz station.
  • Althric’s report contains enough detail for someone else to try to recover the buried suspected cases.
  • The Valdengratz report gives allies grounds to prepare an inspection and warns them about the warded compartments.
  • The compartments checked in Sankt Orn’s Rest were empty.
  • The suspicious shock-braced wagons are still identifiable, and the party marked the most likely current cluster.
  • No additional suspected case was recovered in town.
  • Marda remains frustrated and reachable, but she supplied no new hard proof.
  • Jessa has seen Aurelia spending time with Marda.
  • Strange plant growth was found beneath selected wagon positions.
  • There was no useful physical trail showing when or how the cases moved.
  • A Fey or time-distortion handoff is a theory, not a confirmed answer.
  • Fren recovered mushroom samples from a cellar with possible blight.
  • Branka knows that someone tested her room during the night, but the party does not know whether she can identify the intruder.
  • The party did not capture or interrogate Branka.

Current working picture

Broadbarrel carried at least part of the hidden cargo chain, but the suspected cases are no longer in the compartments the party reached. Either the cargo was transferred during an ordinary gap in attention, hidden nearby, or moved through a stranger mechanism that has not yet been proved.

The party has compensated by putting information into motion. Recovery may be coming from behind, and an inspection may be waiting ahead. Those messages are useful, but Sankt Orn’s Rest is a place of witnessed services and durable records; the party should not assume that sending them was invisible.

Branka is also more alert than she was. Even if she cannot identify who tried her door, the next leg is unlikely to offer the same access.

Active leads for next session

  • Reach Valdengratz and coordinate with the warned station before Branka can change the wagon pattern again.
  • Learn whether the buried cases were recovered safely.
  • Determine when the inspected compartments were emptied.
  • Watch the marked wagons, nearby barrels, and any cargo that is repeatedly moved or unusually guarded.
  • Decide whether the strange ground growth is evidence, coincidence, or a consequence of concentrated magic.
  • Protect Marda—or learn more from her—without giving Jessa a cleaner link.
  • Keep the attempted entry into Branka’s room from becoming attributable to the party.
  • Find out where Esteban Caldera fits into the Valdengratz end of the route.
