Session 5 Player Recap - Dawn Saurakh Raid

Session 5 Recap: Dawn Saurakh Raid

The Broadbarrel lead turned from quiet observation into a disaster at the edge of the road.

Recap

The caravan made camp beside the river as storm clouds gathered. There were about 35 wagons and roughly 40 saurakh, with the beasts corralled outside the main wagon circle. Earlier attempts to locate the hidden refined magic by magic had not produced a clear result.

Branka and Wilhelm were seen in tense conversation. Eavesdropping only caught fragments, but the important word was clear: goblins. Branka then came to the party and explained that forward scouts had found a significant goblin presence in the woods. The guards would be doubled through the night, with three shifts.

The party debated whether to wait, help defend, or exploit the coming threat. Bianca went into the forest and returned with a weak herbal preparation that could make a few targets dizzy and uncertain on their feet. With music as a distraction, Ishtar successfully slipped the mixture into a Brazen Pike stew pot.

The night passed under worsening rain. Near dawn, as handlers began preparing the saurakh and wagons, one of the warning screamers went off. Then came horn calls, shrieking, wolf howls, arrows from the treeline, and mounted goblins driving toward the beast enclosure.

The fight broke open fast:

  • Bianca lit the first rush with moonlight, hurting several goblins and wolves.
  • Gash shot down multiple wolf riders from cover.
  • Fren tried to reposition across the wagons and spent much of the fight wrestling with the mud.
  • Aurelia and Ishtar used the chaos to search wagons for signs of the hidden cargo.
  • Branka’s people fought hard but were split between goblins, beasts, and keeping the caravan from collapsing.

The real attack vector was the saurakh.

A terrible roar rolled over the camp. A huge lizard-shape of mud, roots, and old predator memory appeared near the treeline. The saurakh recognized it as something ancient and panicked. The herd smashed through ropes, handlers, wagons, and civilians as it bolted toward the river.

Bianca was caught in the stampede. Gash reached her and spent healing resources trying to keep her alive, but the injuries were too severe. A camp medic tried to help after the worst of the stampede passed, but Bianca died in the mud.

Gash pursued the goblin caster into the trees in a rage. He found the dropped horn that had called the old lizard-shape, then caught up with goblins trying to drag their injured shaman away. He killed the escorts, survived the shaman’s last desperate thunder burst, killed the caster, and dragged the body back.

After the fighting, the caravan was badly damaged:

  • many handlers were dead
  • multiple civilians were dead or badly injured
  • two Brazen Pike mercenaries were casualties
  • the saurakh had scattered
  • several wagons were overturned or damaged
  • the caravan could not move on immediately

In the aftermath, the party helped with triage and reloading while continuing to watch the cargo. The caravan recovered many, but not all, of the saurakh over the next day and a half. During the reloading, a damaged wagon revealed a hidden compartment. Ishtar also recovered a ledger and privately showed it to the party.

What players would know

  • The goblin raid was aimed at breaking the caravan’s movement, not simply killing guards or stealing cargo.
  • The attackers used a cracked horn connected to an old predator-spirit or summoned lizard-shape.
  • The saurakh were the true battlefield weapon once they panicked.
  • Bianca is dead.
  • Gash recovered the horn and the goblin shaman’s body.
  • Branka survived and remains in command of the surviving Brazen Pike.
  • The caravan is delayed for days while beasts are recovered and wagons are repaired.
  • A hidden compartment was found in a damaged wagon.
  • Ishtar has a ledger taken during the post-raid confusion.

Current working picture

Broadbarrel is still the live lead, but the situation has changed. The caravan is damaged, delayed, grieving, and short of labor. That creates opportunity, but also scrutiny.

The cargo has not been confirmed, but the hidden compartment and ledger are now the strongest evidence that the refined magic is moving through the caravan in a concealed way.

Active leads for Session 6

  • Read or decode Ishtar’s ledger.
  • Inspect the damaged wagon and hidden compartment without exposing the party’s agenda.
  • Decide what to do with the recovered horn.
  • Understand who the goblin shaman was and why the raid targeted the road.
  • Handle Bianca’s death and what it means for Gash, the party, and the mission.
  • Use the caravan delay before Branka and Wilhelm regain full control of the situation.
