Mind Magic + Wards

What players would know

In the Empire, “mind magic” (charms, compulsions, emotional manipulation) is treated like a quiet assault: useful, feared, and socially expensive when discovered.

Because of that, wards against mind magic are widely available (from cheap amulets to serious institutional protections), with varying effectiveness.

What wards do (in plain terms)

Even a cheap ward can make mind magic noticeable. You might still get Charmed or compelled, but you can feel the “hook” and know someone is trying to steer you.

More expensive wards improve your odds of resisting (often felt as clarity, steadiness, or the ability to “push back” against a thought that isn’t yours).

Table expectations (what to expect in play)

  • Out of combat: mind magic is always noticeable.
  • In combat: you may need to make a Wisdom check to notice it in the moment.
  • If you’re aware but still affected, you’ll usually get a Wisdom saving throw each round to shake it off, with escalating advantage the longer you fight it.
  • Better wards also confer advantage on Wisdom saving throws against mind magic.

Common rumors

  • Cheap wards feel like a pressure behind the eyes, a wrongness in the mouth, or a sudden certainty that doesn’t belong.
  • Courts and guilds quietly encourage wards: not because they’re kind, but because scandals are expensive.
