The Central Wilds
What players would know
The Central Wilds are the Empire’s interior that never quite stayed conquered. Past the last toll gate and the last inn where the beer tastes normal, roads thin into suggestions. Maps disagree. Old stone markers turn up in the wrong places. A traveler can walk the same ridge twice and swear it wasn’t there the first time.
People don’t describe the Wilds as “hostile” so much as attentive. You feel watched without seeing eyes. Signs of earlier expeditions appear like warnings left by strangers: a wagon broken cleanly in half, a camp laid out too symmetrically, a journal that stops mid‑sentence.
Common rumors
- Some hermits live in the trees and won’t touch soil because “it listens.”
- Monasteries in the Wilds are either sanctuaries… or traps that learned to pray.
