Pikes and Swords

What players would know

Pikes and Swords is a common road-and-barracks board game: cheap to make, easy to wager on, and just structured enough for people to pretend it teaches discipline. It is played on a checkered board with two kinds of pieces per side, usually carved as long-shafted pikes and short-bladed swords.

Most people know the folk version, not the same version. Every tavern, caravan, and garrison has small rule drift, but the core idea is stable: pikes hold, swords break, and nobody wins by rushing alone.

Common rumors

  • Caravan guards say you can tell what kind of officer someone is by how early they throw away their swords.
  • Teamsters claim the best players are not the bold ones but the ones who know when to let a lane look weak.
